Earth Day

by Jane Yolen

I am the Earth
And the Earth is me.
Each blade of grass,
Each honey tree,
Each bit of mud,
And stick and stone
Is blood and muscle,
Skin and bone.
And just as I
Need every bit
Of me to make
My body fit,
So Earth needs
Grass and stone and tree
And things that grow here
That's why we
Celebrate this day.
That's why across
The world we say:
As long as life,
As dear, as free,
I am the Earth
And the Earth is me.

Vogelpark Avifauna

Vogelpark Avifauna

Hoorn 65
Alphen aan den Rijn, Zuid-Holland

The nearly 60 year old bird park is a home for more than 3000 birds. Many endangered bird species live there and an attempt was made to make their habitats as close as possible to those in the wild. Small buildings in their enclosures had nests on top of their roofs for example.

But the most spectacular displays are the well-kept birds. This park is considered to be first Bird Parks in the world. You can see there birds you may never have encountered before.

Those birds which cannot survive in a cold climate, have a small house inside their living areas. Many birds were free to fly away, but did not. They did, however fly from one side of a lake to another or to the small island in the middle of the lake (the pelicans).

The Bird Park and Adventure Playground are opened all year round from 9 a.m to 6 p.m.

Admission fees:
Adult Euro 11,50
Children ages 3-12 Euro 10,00
+65 Euro 10,50

Twice daily birds demontrations (in dutch)
Penguins feeding time
A large outdoor playgound (highly rated by the girls)
Feeding the parakeets (highly rated by everybody)
Boat ride around the nearby lakes
The Filipino jungle birds

So, if you are looking for a quieter outings with the kids, I would recommend this place, as it has less tourist-traffic (they are still at Keukenhofs!!)
