Chocolate Chip Date Cake

Chocolate Chip Date Cake
1 lb dates, chopped
2 tsp baking soda
2 cups boiling water
3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped pecans

Place dates and1 tsp baking soda in a bowl. Stir in boiling water and leave it to cool completely.

In a mixing bowl, cream shortening with sugar. Beat in egg.

Combine flour, salt and 1 tsp baking soda; add to the creamed mixture alternately with the boiled dates.

Pour into a greased baking pan. Sprinkle top with chocolate chips and pecan nuts.

Bake at 180 C for 30 minutes.
