Bakewell earns a mention in the Domesday Book, calling the town ‘Badequella’, meaning Bath-Well.

The name Bakewell does not refer to the baker’s art, but is a corruption of the words bad, or bath, and kwell, or source, referring to a number of wells and clusters of thermal springs that used to flow in the area.
